Delhi Home Renovation: First Steps

So now you have a house to call home, well almost. One tiny step of renovation, then you can enjoy. Let me burst that bubble.

If you are under budget constraints and can’t outsource supervision of the project to a designer, then there are going to be hectic days ahead. It’s no easy task. But, if you are the kind of person who would like to know how much that door eye your carpenter installed costs, then you just need to do a little bit of research before you begin. Here are the steps I followed BEFORE I started talking quotes from contractors. Read here if you want to know more about that.

First Steps to Home Renovation:

  1. Measure, Measure, Measure:
    • Buy a proper measuring tape (Rs. 40) from any hardware shop.
    • Ask a friend to bend down 20 times in a minute. If s/he passes the test, bribe and take her/him along.
    • Pen and paper. Don’t forget.
    • Measure dimensions of walls you want to get tiling done, of the length and breadth of your kitchen for modular cabinets, everything that you think should be measured, measure.
  2. List Requirements:
    • Now you don’t have to specific about details like the colour of the tiles that you dreamt of, but list the major requirements for every room.
      • Like Wall Hung WC, Rain Showerhead, Wash Basin.
      • Make a room-wise word document or an excel sheet.
  3. Visualize:
    • Plan your storage. Built-ins are better.

These three steps will be your first steps to Home Renovation.
