5 Must-dos of Street Shopping

I always end up wasting money because whatever I get from Sarojini and Lajpat, does not fit me properly.

– Said my sweet novice street-shopper friend. Shopping on a budget has its negatives, but that does not mean that you need to compromise on the fit. All it entails is that you go prepared till you reach a level where you can gauge the fit of a piece just by visualizing how it would sit on you.

To reach this level 5, you have to pass level 1 with distinction. To make that leveling up easier, here are the top 5 must-dos of street shopping: things to do before you go street shopping.

1. Carry a shoulder bag-pack: Even if you are just accompanying a friend, make sure you carry a comfortable shoulder bag. Two reasons: you need those hands free to pick and examine your buys; and you won’t end up dropping that favourite pick in the market. With so much crowd, the unkindness of the weather, a shoulder bag to stuff every little thing will make the experience a little less worrisome. Add: a water bottle. I put my wallet, phone and glares in a swing bag for ease of access.

2. Take along a Top that fits. I do not mean a stretchable one. A cotton one that just fits right at the bust and waist. A kurta will do too. This will save you alteration money, and will get the fit you are going for.

3. Boni and Badhana Concepts: If you are the first customer, a shopkeeper will mostly give you the piece for the price you ask. They love their first and last customer. It is believed that the day goes well if the first customer is happy. Go at 11 am or stay till 9 pm.

4. Comfy shoes: Leave those lovely Carlton wedges at home. Comfort + you don’t want them to get dirty navigating fresh paan spit.

5. Make a mental note of where you pick up stuff from. Not every shop. That’s not humanly possible if you end up buying 10 tops. But, if you are unsure of an item, pick it up and ask the shop number, or remember landmarks. Most shopkeepers easily change a piece if it is unworn and unwashed. Go after 2 pm for this. They don’t want their first customer to ask for a change. You will be asked to wait till 2pm.

And, if you know you loved that Vero Moda for 200/-, casually ask the guy: “Bhaiya, problem huyi to change kardoge? (Will you change the top if there’s a problem with it?)” They are very honest about this. The last thing they want is a furious customer shouting at them in front of potential ones.

Happy Shopping.
Love.
